Arecibo The Diamond of the North

About one hour from Casa Clara Vista is one of my favorite places in Puerto Rico; the dynamic and unique city of Arecibo.   The largest municipality in area in Puerto Rico and the third oldest, Arecibo spans the human experience from the neolithic to the space age.   Home to the breathtaking "Cueva de Los Indios," a cave housing notable Taino petroglyphs, as well as one of the largest radio telescopes in the world (the Arecibo Observatory) where the SETI program keeps an ear out for E.T. Arecibo is truly a wonder in any place let alone on a tropical island.   Rough crashing waves, the tallest statue in the Americas (Yes--MUCH bigger than the Statue of Liberty!) a lighthouse, a cathedral, a malecon and great seafood.  What's not to like spending a day (or two-- or three) in this remarkable city.

Symbols of Arecibo: The flag with its heraldic tribute to the founder Felipe de Beaumont y Navarre and the Arms of the City; a map of the municipality showing the locations of the nineteen barrios or "townships;" the municipality's coat of arms featuring Taino art, heraldic motifs and the five towers of a Spanish municipality.
